On Thursday 30 January 2025, Fondazione Pastificio Cerere presented the group exhibition Aperture, the third instalment of ‘The Archive Project,’ curated by CAMPO. The exhibition will be open to the public from Friday 31 January to Saturday 15 March 2025.
To celebrate its 10th year of activity, CAMPO invited architects, artists, photographers, and curators who have significantly influenced its trajectory, to reflect on the idea of aperture as an aesthetic, technical and conceptual device. The works exhibited by the participants will be set up in the exhibition space of the Silos, which, being windowless, will be transformed into a sort of interior façade.
The Aperture exhibition reflects on opening as a constitutive gesture of architecture. If building is separating, enclosing, giving shape to the limit between an inside and an outside, opening is revealing the threshold between distinct worlds, connecting what was separated and therefore challenging established orders.
The history of architecture can be read as a constant tension between the continuity of a limit and its repeated interruption. Perforated envelopes are architecture’s fundamental aesthetic device – a grammar of forms and symbols, a rhythm of columns, a frame enclosing the flow of time. Piercing walls is also the foundation of construction technique, as opening voids means governing the permeability to the elements, challenging the force of gravity, exhibiting or hiding human and material effort.
Openings define the threshold between inside and outside, between public and private, domestic and unfamiliar. The frame directs the gaze to construct the landscape, the gap regulates flows and access to resources, the interval builds an order that transforms land into territory. Openings build both the material and conceptual space in which we live but also the possibility of exploring imaginary worlds.
